Anti-phospholipid antibodies in serum from patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome

Abstract: Our findings suggest that in GBS there is an extensive immune reaction, which is altered after gamma-globulin treatment. Anti-cardiolipin and anti-phosphatidylinositol antibodies could be useful markers for the response to treatment.

“…Association of autoimmune diseases such as systematic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma with GBS (96) led researchers (Nakos et al) to ascertain the role of few antiphospholipid antibodies which include phosphatidic acid (PA), cardiolipin, phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylserine (PS), phosphatidylinositol (PI), phosphatidylglyecerol (PG), and cardiolipin. The antibody levels were shown to decrease following 1-day treatment with γ-globulin (IVIG) and increased 2 days following cessation of treatment (82). This indicates that serum levels of anti-PI and anti-cardiolipin antibodies may be useful to monitor the response of the patient toward treatment with IVIG in GBS patients (82).…”

“…α 6 β 4 immunoreactivity was detected in 66% of GBS patients [ 117 ]. Anti-phospholipid antibodies were detected in GBS patients and were downregulated by IVIg [ 118 ]. Patients with Gal-C-GBS were more frequently involved with sensory deficits, autonomic dysfunctions, and antecedent Mycoplasma pneumonia infections [ 119 ].…”

“…A SGB, uma polineuropatia inflamatória aguda mediada imunologicamente, é a desordem do SNP mais freqüentemente relacionada à SAF. Num estudo prospectivo, controlado e não randomizado, os aFL das classes IgA, IgM e IgG foram encontrados no grupo de pacientes com SGB, mas em nenhum dos nove pacientes do grupo controle (24) . O estudo ENMG dos pacientes revelou polineuropatia desmielinizante aguda.…”
