Anti-nociceptive effects of Carpolobia lutea G. Don (Polygalaceae) leaf fractions in animal models

Abstract: Leaves from Carpolobia lutea (Polygalaceae) were screened to establish the antiulcer ethnomedicinal claim and to quantitatively isolate, elucidate the active compounds by semi-preparative HPLC. The anti-nociceptive effects of Carpolobia lutea (CL) G. Don (Polygalaceae) organic leaf extracts were tested in experimental models in mice. The anti-nociceptive mechanism was determined using tail-flick test, acetic acid-induced abdominal constrictions, formalin-induced hind paw licking and the hot plate test. The fra… Show more

“…Polyphenols have been isolated from the leaf of C. lutea (Nwidu et al, 2011). It has been suggested that polyphenols are responsible for the antibacterial effects upon Streptococcus mutans (Kakiuchi et al, 1986).…”

“…Moreover, it is important to state that 770 mg/kg dose of EAF reduced ulcer index comparable to the standard drug, cimetidine (100 mg/kg). At that same dose of the fraction in another study, the intestinal propulsive movements (IPM) in rat was inhibited by 100% through α 2 -adrenergic mechanism (Nwidu et al, 2011). Thus the possible mechanism of antiulcer activity may not be unrelated with the inhibition muscarinic receptors in the parietal cells.…”

“…All the doses of EAF utilised in the experiment were very effective than the 30 mg/kg omeprazole. At a critical dose of 770 mg/kg, the same dose that gave 100% inhibition of intestinal transit (Nwidu et al, 20011), the ulcers induced by ethanol were protected 100%. The low RSA may preclude DPPH assay as a possible mechanism of elucidating its antioxidant effects.…”

“…This trails and camps created by tradesmen form openings for poachers and other NTFPs users. The tradesmen embark on continuous harvest without planting and through this means have endangered the species that is traditionally used for the treatment of various ailments (Burkill, 1985;Mitaine-offer et al, 2002;Nwidu and Nwafor, 2009;Okokon et al 2011;Bero et al, 2011;Jackson et al, 2011; www.ccsenet.org/ijb Nwidu et al, 2011;Idowu et al, 2005;Ettebong and Nwafor, 2009;Ajiwhen and Bisong, 2013), including memory enhancement and madness.
