Anti-Müllerian hormone reflects the severity of polycystic ovary syndrome

Abstract: Serum AMH has the capacity to act as a diagnostic test for PCOS. Moreover, since its value rises with the more marked phenotypes, different cut-off values need to be used to differentiate those patients with polycystic ovarian morphology (PCOM), hyperandrogenism (HA) and oligoanovulation (OA).

“…Testosterone is secreted from the adrenal glands (25%), the ovaries (25%), and from the peripheral conversion of androstenedione (50%) . AMH is secreted from the ovary and is a more sensitive marker of PCOM/PCOS than USG and was significantly increased in the persistent acne group (Table ) which is consistent with the preponderance of PCOS in this group (Table ).…”

“…In PCOS with high androgen, serum AMH levels increase significantly compared with PCOS with normal androgen [27]. Others suggest that serum AMH level is related to the severity of PCOS [34,35]. Such an interaction may contribute to the pathogenesis of PCOS [28].…”

“…16 It would be advantageous if AMH can replace the use of transvaginal ultrasound given the complexity, cost, inter-observer variation involved in the determination of AFC and OV. 6,17,18 The strong correlation that has been reported between PCOS and AMH by a multitude of studies, [19][20][21] has even lead to the view that AMH alone, may be a suitable as a single biomarker for PCOS. Nevertheless, there is a lack of studies examining the performance of various proposed criteria compared to the Rotterdam 2003 criteria.…”
