Anti-Inflammatory and Antioxidant Properties of the Extract, Tiliroside, and Patuletin 3-O-β-D-Glucopyranoside from Pfaffia townsendii (Amaranthaceae)

Abstract: Brazilian ginseng, including Pfaffia townsendii, is used in popular medicine as a natural anti-inflammatory, tonic, analgesic, and antidiabetic agent. In this study, we investigated the chemical composition and evaluated the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of the P. townsendii ethanolic extract as well as the major isolated glycoside flavonoids tiliroside and patuletin 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside. Chromatographic techniques and spectroscopic analysis were used for the isolation and identification of t… Show more

“…32,[39][40][41][42][43][44] Several studies have reported that these compounds -either from various plant parts or as ingredients of plant extracts or enriched herbal preparations -exerted both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities in various in vitro, cell culture, and animal models (see, for instance, references). [45][46][47][48][49][50] Summarizing, the results from the current study provide evidence that the fresh M. arborescens stem juice possesses considerable membranestabilizing and antioxidant activities, and contains phytochemicals that may be associated with these activities. These data support the ethnopharmacological use of Montrichradia spp.…”

“…Tiliroside , the main quality marker of R. chingii Hu, has attracted widespread attention for its wide range of bioactive effects including its anti-oxidant and anti-aging activities. Investigations conducted by Corrêa et al ( 65 ) on anti-oxidant property of tiliroside confirmed the anti-oxidant activity in vivo tests, it may have therapeutic potential against oxidative stress–related disorders. Additionally, Li et al ( 66 ) showed that tiliroside performed more effectively as a cytoprotective and anti-oxidant agent than astragalin.…”

“…Some publications have indicated that changes in the microenvironment around Lys and Arg impact its reaction activity greatly. , In addition, tiliroside can insert into the hydrophobic pocket of OVA and form a stable complex via hydrogen bond, hydrophobic interaction, and van der Waals forces (Figure ), which might hinder the accessibility of the free amino group to fructose . In addition, the radical scavenging ability of tiliroside might also contribute to its inhibition on OVA glycation under heating conditions …”
