Anti‐Inflammatory and Anticancer Activity of Ergoflavin Isolated from an Endophytic Fungus

Abstract: Biodiversity is a major resource for identification of new molecules with specific therapeutic activities. To identify such an active resource, high throughput screening (HTS) of the extracts prepared from such diversity are examined on specific functional assays. Based on such HTS studies and bioactivity-based fractionation, we have isolated ergoflavin, a pigment from an endophytic fungus, growing on the leaves of an Indian medicinal plant Mimosops elengi (bakul). We report here the isolation, structure eluci… Show more

“…Ergolavin, a novel anticancer agent, was isolated from the leaf endophytes of an Indian medicinal plant Mimusops elengi, belonging to family Sapotaceae. Ergolavin is a dimeric xanthene linked at position-2, belonging to the ergochrome class of compounds [51]. Another compound from ergochrome class, i.e., secalonic acid D, a mycotoxin, isolated from the mangrove endophytic fungus also exhibits a good cytotoxic activity on HL60 and K562 cells by inducing leukemia cell apoptosis [52].…”

“…Moreover this endophyte produced the anti-cancer metabolites-Camptothecin and 9-methoxy camptothecin . -Ergoflavin‖ (C 30 H 26 O 14 ), a dimeric xanthenes linked in position 2,belongs to the compound class called ergochromes and was described as a new anticancer agent isolated from an endophytic fungi rising on the Mimuscop elengi (Sapotaceae) plant leaves [99].-Secalonic acid D‖ (C 32 H 30 O 14 ), a mycotoxin also belonging to ergochrome class, is recognized to have powerful anticancer activities. It was isolated from the mangrove endophytic fungus [100].…”
