Anti-Helicobacter pylori activity and Essential Oil Composition of Thymus caramanicus from Iran

Abstract: The essential oil of the dried aerial parts of Thymus caramanicus at full flowering stage was prepared by hydrodistillation with a yield of 2.5% oil. The oil analysis by a combination of capillary GC and GC-MS revealed 26 components of which carvacrol (68.9%) was the main component, followed by p-cymene (6.0%), thymol (5.3%), γ-terpinene (4.6%) and borneol (4.0%) representing 98.9% of the total oil. The in vitro antibacterial activity of the essential oil was determined against ten clinical isolates of Helicob… Show more

“…The anti‐ H . pylori potential of carvacrol has been proven in several studies (Bergonzelli et al ., ; Eftekhar et al ., ; Falsafi et al ., ), and our findings are in accordance with them. On the contrary, monoterpene hydrocarbons, sabinene and γ‐terpinene, did not express any inhibitory activity in concentration up to 2.05 mg mL −1 .…”

“…Thus, the further search for the most efficient essential oil based formulation against H . pylori is justified (Bergonzelli et al ., ; Deriu et al ., ; Eftekhar et al ., ; Esmaeili et al ., ; Falsafi et al ., ; Ohno et al ., ; Ozen et al ., ).…”

“…It is believed that part of these activities is due to the volatile constituents. In recent years, the essential oil chemistry and polymorphism of various Thymus species have been extensively investigated [3][4][5][6][7]. These studies have emphasized the existence of marked chemical differences among oils extracted from different species or varieties.…”
