Background Annona species can be found in the subtropical and tropical parts of the world. Because of their medicinal capabilities and highly exotic edible fruits, they are one of the most important members of the Annonaceae family. Isoquinolines, pyrimidine-β-carboline alkaloids, lectins, acetogenins, and volatile oils are among the active metabolites found in this genus, all of which have been shown to have anti-diabetic and antioxidant activities. Main body The fundamental objective of this review was to summarize the antidiabetic and antioxidant activity based on reported secondary data from different plants of the genus Annona. These species include Annona cherimola, Annona squamosa, Annona macroprophyllata, Annona muricate, Annona reticulata, Annona carcans, Annona coriacea, Annona cornifolia, and Annona senegalensis. The Annona species investigated had significant antihyperglycemic and antioxidant properties. Conclusion The available evidence, both in vitro and in vivo, confirms the ability of Annona species to treat diabetes in addition to producing oxidative damage.

Polyherbal formulation (HF) containing different herbs have been used to treat diabetic patients by ayurvedic practitioners in India. The present study reports the effect of HF alone and with metformin on different rat models of hyperglycemia. HF treatment with HF alone and in combination with metformin elicited a significant hypoglycemic effect on epinephrine hyperglycemia and alloxan diabetic rats. HF treatment also altered the glucose-tolerance curve pattern both in normal and diabetic rats. Further, HF treatment alone and with metformin increased liver glycogen, glucose transfer in the liver, enhanced glucose uptake process in peripheral muscles, and also improved architecture of β-islets of Langerhans of diabetic rats. The combination of HF with metformin elicited a greater degree of hypoglycemic activity, which was reflected both on blood glucose level as well as other biochemical parameters studied. The hypoglycemic effect of HF may be mediated through pancreatic as well as extrapancreatic systems. Further, HF combination with metformin seems to be useful in diabetes mellitus and needs to be investigated on human subjects to establish such potentiation hypoglycemic effect of metformin. INTRODUCTION: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by abnormalities in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism 1 , which leads to hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia and hypercholesterolemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion or action or both 2. The disease is managed clinically with insulin and oral hypoglycemic agents like sulphonylureas and biguanides. The biguanide phenformin was withdrawn from US market in 1997 following reports of the relatively high incidence of lactoacidosis 3 and later replaced by metformin.

Objective: The objective of the present study is to explore the antihyperglycemic and antihyperlipidemic activities of Jatropha gossypifolia methanolic extract (ME) in streptozotocin (STZ)-nicotinamide (NIC) induced diabetic model.Methods: Type II diabetes was induced by a single dose of NIC (110 mg/kg) and STZ (50 mg/kg b.w.) intraperitoneally. The diabetic animals were treated with ME (50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg b.w.) of J. gossypifolia. At the end of experimental period, the effect of the ME on creatinine level, triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and very LDL (VLDL) were analyzed. Liver function parameters such as glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT), glutamate pyruvate transaminase (GPT) were analyzed and liver glycogen content was estimated spectrophotometrically. After scarification of animals, the liver was collected and subjected to histopathology analysis. Glycogen content was estimated spectrophotometrically.Results: The ME treated diabetic rats showed a significant increase in HDL level and a decrease in creatinine, TG, TC, and VLDL levels. The treated group showed a significant decrease in liver function parameters such as GOT and GPT levels and significantly increased the liver glycogen content.Conclusion: These findings demonstrate that ME possess antihyperglycemic and antihyperlipidemic activity against STZ - NIC induced diabetic rats.
