“…Several classes of secondary metabolites have been isolated from dried maca tubers, including alkaloids, glucosinolates, aromatic isothiocyanates and macamides . To the best of our knowledge, previous studies related to the anti‐fatigue effect of maca mainly concentrated on maca polysaccharides . Compared to biological macromolecules with complex structures, small‐molecule substances also play an important role in many aspects.…”

“…14 To the best of our knowledge, previous studies related to the anti-fatigue effect of maca mainly concentrated on maca polysaccharides. [15][16][17] Compared to biological macromolecules with complex structures, small-molecule substances also play an important role in many aspects. Recently, another main component and bioactive ingredient in maca, macamides, a class of benzylated or 3-methoxylbenzylated alkamides, has increasingly gained attention.…”

“…The differences can be attributed to the origin of the studied Maca. Due to the diversity in composition and structure, LMP exhibited comprehensive bioactivities including anti‐fatigue (Li et al, ), antioxidant (Campos et al, ), endurance enhancement (Choi et al, ), anti‐tumor (Stojanovska et al, ), increase in sexual activity (Avelar, Orihuela, Vazquez, & Palma‐Irizarry, ), and so on.…”

“…Many works have presented details of the compositions, structures, and biological activities of the LMP (Zang et al, ). It was found that the polysaccharide was mainly composed of glucose, arabinose, galactose, and mannose (Zhang, Wu, et al, , Li et al, ). The LMP potentially plays the role in both immunity enhancement and antitumor function.…”

“…It has been consumed as a food by local inhabitants of the Peruvian central Andes due to the nutritional and medicinal properties of its hypocotyls (Valerio & Gonzales, ). Previous studies have revealed that Maca has many pharmacological properties including improving semen quality (Lee, Lee, You, & Ha, ), possessing hepatoprotective activity against alcoholic hepatic injury (L. Zhang, Zhao, Wang, Zhao, & Zhao, ), and exhibiting dose‐dependent positive effects on fatigue‐related parameters (Li et al, ). Maca alkaloids, steroids, glucosinolates, isothiocyanates, and macamides are probably responsible for its ability to act as a fertility enhancer, aphrodisiac, adaptogen, immunostimulant, and anabolic and to influence hormonal balance (Valentová & Ulrichová, ).…”
