Anti-DNA antibodies: a diagnostic and prognostic tool for systemic lupus erythematosus?

Abstract: The clinical impact of anti-DNA antibodies lies on their diagnostic power for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), being a formal classification criterion. In spite of such a disease association, low-avidity anti-DNA antibodies might also be part of the natural autoantibody repertoire. Their switch to pathogenic high-avidity autoantibodies is the result of the autoimmune process leading to SLE.Anti-DNA antibodies were shown to play a role in SLE pathogenesis and particularly in kidney damage. Accordingly, antib… Show more

“…Our findings were somewhat different to those reported [10,15,16]. Although hypocomplementemia and SLEDAI score are commonly assumed as indicators of active lupus [17], our study is the first one that identifies them as independent risk factor for poor renal outcome. Moreover, in this study, severe proliferative (LN IV) and chronic sclerotic (LN VI) lesion were also identified as risk factors, which confirmed the necessity of renal biopsy in lupus nephritis patients.…”

“…Most studies link lupus nephritis to the presence of nephritogenic high avidity anti-dsDNA Ab as detected by C. luciliae immunofluorescence or the Farr radioactivity assay [28][29][30] . Anti-dsDNA Ab are, however, often present long before SLE is clinically apparent and they gradually obtain their nephritogenic potential through repeated antigenic stimulation 28,31,32 .…”
