Anti-cancer effect of Petasites hybridus L. (Butterbur) root extract on breast cancer cell lines

Abstract: In this study, we present initial data for the potential anti-cancer effects of standardized Bulgarian Petasites hybridus root extract against breast cancer cells. The results showed that Butterbur extract (BE) caused a dose-dependent selective reduction in viability with concomitant increase of apoptosis in human breast cancer cells after 72 h treatment. We found the highest cytotoxicity of BE to MDA-MB-231 cells (IC 50 -520 μg/mL), followed by the MCF-7 cancer cell line (IC 50 -865 μg/mL). At the same time, … Show more

“…Previous studies using the DAPI staining assay have similarly shown that extracts from Petasites hybridus, Artemisia nilagirica, and Zanthoxylum armatum also initiate apoptosis in these cells, thereby exhibiting anticancer activity. [24][25][26] Consequently, these findings are compatible with the results of previously described experiments suggesting that the I. verum methanolic extract is efficient against MDA-MB-231 cancer cells.…”

“…21 Petasites hybridus, Artemisia nilagirica, and Zanthoxylum armatum extracts are reported to exert anticancer action via apoptosis in MCF-7 cells, studied by DAPI dye staining assay. [22][23][24] In the present study, I. verum extract also caused significant induction of apoptosis at the IC 50 dose of 5.5µg/ml in MCF-7 cells, confirming that the cytotoxic effect of I. verum extract is due to automatic cell death. These findings are consistent with the results obtained from both cell viability and cell proliferation assays.…”
