Anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory effects of ethanol extract from Houttuynia cordata poultice

Abstract: Houttuynia cordata (HC) has been commonly used as many traditional remedies in local areas of Japan. Although many pharmacological activities of HC have been reported, the mechanism underlying the effect of HC remains unknown. We conducted the interview survey in Japan to verify how HC was actually used. The interview survey revealed that HC poultice (HCP) prepared from smothering fresh leaves of HC was most frequently used for the treatment of purulent skin diseases including furuncle and carbuncle with high … Show more

“…Moreover, decanoyl acetaldehyde exhibited a better antibacterial activity than other aldehydes. [30] Further, 2-undecanone, a major constituent of H. cordata oil, showed moderate inhibition of Escherichia coli and inhibited the growth of several wood-destroying fungi. Studies showed that myrcene singularly exhibited no observable antibacterial activity; however, it enhanced the activities when mixed with other components in the essential oil.…”

“…Inhibition of inflammation by different solvent extracts H. cordata in vivo and in vitro models. Not mentioned (Sekita et al, 2016) Ethanol ( (Han et al, 2009) medicinal value (Fu et al, 2013). HC extracts were shown to be effective against various ailments including cancer, diabetes, obesity, lung fibrosis, skin diseases and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) (Chang et al, 2001;Du et al, 2012;Kumar et al, 2014;Kwon and Kim, 2014;Lu et al, 2006;Miyata et al, 2010).…”

In addition, HC extracts were also shown to have both anti-bacterial and anti-viral activities against a host of pathogens such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, corona and dengue viruses etc (Chiow et al, 2016;Lau et al, 2008;Li et al, 2017;Sekita et al, 2016;Verma et al, 2017). Based upon HC efficacy in improving the immune system of patients infected with the severe acute respiratory syndrome, Chinese experts have also enlisted HC for their national SARS program (Lu et al, 2006).…”

“…Houttuynia cordata polysaccharide (HCP) is extracted from Houttuynia cordata, a herb which served as a key traditional Chinese medicine for pneumonia treatment [12] . The antiviral [13] , anti-inflammatory [14] , antibacterial [15] and antiproliferative [16] activities of Houttuynia cordata were demonstrated by many researches. Our previous studies proved that HCP reduced the acute lung inflammatory injury caused by LPS in vivo [17] and ameliorated pulmonary inflammatory injury caused by H1N1 infection via inhibition of TLR4 pathway activation and pro-inflammatory cytokines expression [12] .…”
