Anti-Alzheimer Drug Delivery via Pickering Emulsions Stabilized by Plate-like Cellulose Nanocrystals

Vasily I. Mikhaylov,
Mikhail A. Torlopov,
Irina N. Vaseneva
et al.

Abstract: In this work, we studied for the first time the formation of olive oil emulsions in water stabilized by plate-like nanocrystals with the supramolecular structure of cellulose II (pCNC). Effects of storage, pCNC concentration, and NaCl on the stability and properties of Pickering emulsions, including the creaming index, droplet size, zeta potential, acid−base surface properties, and rheology, were studied. A significant influence of the shape of nanoparticles (compared to the classical rod-like shape) on the st… Show more

“…Nanomaterial assemblies with tailored structural properties are designed to take advantage of such alterations. In this regard, NPs are designed to control the coalescence of bubbles and drops and to stabilize emulsions and foams. Resulting Pickering emulsions and foams have a long list of applications in food technology, pharmaceuticals, cosmetology, and oil recovery. Furthermore, in many biological media, such as the surface of blood cells, the interaction of NPs with surfactants, proteins, lipids, and even with cells and tissues is inevitable due to their nanosize and large surface-to-mass ratio. , Therefore, it is essential to increase our understanding of how the attachment of NP assemblies affects the interfacial properties.…”

“…They can be oil droplets dispersed in water or water droplets dispersed in the oil phase. As Pickering emulsions can encapsulate a wide variety of cargo materials, they are attractive carriers in the cosmetic and food industries, ,, dispersing media for enzyme catalysis and platforms for pharmaceutical and healthcare industry. In particular, their biomedical and clinical applications have recently increased. …”
