Anthropometric and Functional Profile of Selected vs. Non-Selected 13-to-17-Year-Old Soccer Players

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to compare anthropometric and functional profiles of 13-to-17-year-old soccer players according to their competitive level. Height, body mass, percentage of body fat, countermovement jump height, change of direction ability, 5- and 15-m sprint times, repeated sprint ability (RSA), intermittent recovery performance, and dribbling skills were collected in 115 young Italian soccer players. Players were divided into selected (i.e., competing at national level, n = 17 U15 and 47 U17) a… Show more

“…As regards the anthropometric parameters, the selected players were generally taller compared to their non-selected counterparts, even is significant differences were observed only in U12 and U14 categories. This is in line with previous research showing that adult players attaining higher levels of play were, on average, substantially differentiated from amateur players in height as well as body mass [ 23 , 43 ].…”

“…Considering the difference from elite and non-elite groups, from the results emerged that all the physical performance variables showed significant differences between the two groups in each age category. This confirm that high-intensity activities are fundamental aspects for performance in soccer [ 43 , 46 ]. The elite players were capable of higher acceleration over 15 m than non-elite players.…”

“…However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no available information regarding the use of the discriminant analysis to differentiate Brazilian runners from different competitive levels based on anthropometric and training variables. However, this statistical approach has been primarily used to differentiate athletes across different sports, based on a large number of variables, such as physical performance, motor coordination [ 23 ], anthropometric and biomotor variables among elite female adolescents of different sports [ 24 ], characteristics of soccer athletes selected and non-selected [ 25 ], and physiological variables [ 26 ].…”

“…Research on the physical performance characteristics of youth football players has made significant progress in recent years. Studies have revealed that elite youth football players are superior in anthropometrics (height, body mass, and body composition) ( Bidaurrazaga-Letona et al, 2016 ; Deprez et al, 2015a ; Nughes et al, 2020 ; Bongiovanni et al, 2020 ) and physical characteristics (speed, agility, anaerobic endurance, strength, and power) ( Emmonds et al, 2016 ; Aquino et al, 2017 ; Grendstad et al, 2020 ; Deprez et al, 2015b ), which are important factors influencing selection by coaches ( Patel et al, 2020 ; Bidaurrazaga-Letona et al, 2019 ; Nughes et al, 2020 ). As such, football players’ physical characteristics significantly influence the selection of elite vs non-elite players while they are still youths ( Itoh & Hirose, 2020 ).…”
