Antennas utilized for intra-vehicle 3–11GHz and 55–65GHz channel measurement

Abstract: In this work, antennas utilized for an intra-vehicle 3-11 GHz and 55-65 GHz channel measurement are described. A measurement antenna should not only provide a wide-band impedance bandwidth but also have a stable radiation pattern and a high fidelity factor. For the lower frequency band, a metal conical monopole antenna is proposed for its frequency stable Hplane omnidirectional radiation pattern. An open waveguide antenna (OWGA) and a substrate integrated waveguide slot antenna array are discussed for 55-65 GH… Show more

“…To power the transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX) hardware, the TX is powered by a large battery pack mounted in the trunk, while the RX is powered by a generator loaded on the trailer. The RX and TX are each equipped with a pair of omnidirectional Substrate-Integrated waveguide (SIW), as expounded upon in [10], [11]. The antenna is situated in the upper left-hand corner of the windshield of the test vehicle, as viewed from the driver's perspective, and is securely fastened using a suction cup.…”

“…The same antenna, shown in Figure 5, is used at the transmitter and receiver sides. It is a redesign of the conical monopole antenna (CMP) introduced in [31]. The choice of the CMP is motivated by the requirement for a constant gain within the frequency span of interest and by radial symmetry of the antenna.…”

“…The RF signal then propagates through the channel, which is the object of the measurement. For the channel sounding, typically an open‐ended WR15 waveguide is used as it is very simple and offers an acceptable radiation pattern [14]. The received signal is then down converted and the output signal – complex, in the form of I and Q components – is passed to the oscilloscope for sampling and further processing.…”
