Antecedents of emotion knowledge: Predictors of individual differences in young children

Abstract: Individual differences in emotion knowledge were examined among 188 4-year-old, predominantly African American children. Cognitive ability and negative emotionality, maternal characteristics (parenting, verbal intelligence, and depressive symptoms), environmental risk, and child sex were examined as predictors of emotion knowledge. Regression analyses indicated that cognitively skilled children who resided in relatively low risk environments with verbally intelligent mothers possessed greater emotion knowledge… Show more

“…Such results seem to support studies by Bennett, Bendersky and Lewis (2005) as well as by MacDonald and Kirkpatrick (1996),in which no gender differences were indicated. The study by Bennett et al (2005) investigated individual differences in emotion knowledge, while MacDonald and investigated how accurately children recognised facial expressions for emotions using schematic drawings and photographs as stimuli. Kirkpatrick and Bell (1996) mentioned that the gender differences found in some studies investigating emotions were likely to be indicative of method rather than actual differences.…”

“…[11] Z efektywną komunikacją wiąże się również satysfakcja z życia rodzinnego definiowana jako stopień, w jakim członkowie rodziny czują się ze sobą szczęśliwi i spełnieni. Badania potwierdzają, że prawidłowemu rozwojowi emocjonalnemu sprzyjają ciepło rodzicielskie, troska, pozytywny klimat emocjonalny (Bennett, Bendersky, Lewis, 2005), akceptacja dzieci przez rodziców (Bhatia, 2012). Kiedy rodzic wykazuje postawę pełną ciepła i serdecznego nastawienia, wówczas dzieci doświadczają mniej złości i rzadziej przejawiają agresywne zachowania, wynikające z odczuwania silnych, przykrych emocji (Eisenberg, 2005).…”
