Ansa pancreatica: an anatomic variation and a rare cause of acute pancreatitis

Abstract: A pancreatic duct variation, as the ansa pancreatica, can be diagnosed during a severe acute pancreatitis. It is still not clear whether the presence of these two pathologies is a coincidence or if the ansa pancreatica is the cause of the acute pancreatitis. New studies are necessary to clarify these points.

“…However, patients with pancreas divisum and/or ansa pancreatica would hypothetically have an inadequate drainage of the pancreatic duct system and consequently have a relative increase of intraductal pressure into the main pancreatic duct. This has been suggested as a causative factor of pancreatitis (6,7).…”

“…Since it was first reported by Dawson and Langman in 1961, there have been case reports and series on ansa pancreatica [ 39 - 41 ]. Many studies have hypothesized ansa pancreatica as a risk factor for acute pancreatitis [ 40 , 41 ].…”

“…Since it was first reported by Dawson and Langman in 1961, there have been case reports and series on ansa pancreatica [ 39 - 41 ]. Many studies have hypothesized ansa pancreatica as a risk factor for acute pancreatitis [ 40 , 41 ]. This hypothesis is supported by the findings of a recent case-control study which reported a significantly higher risk of recurrent acute pancreatitis in individuals with ansa pancreatica [ 39 ].…”

“…There have only a few articles exploring the ansa pancreatica and recurrent/chronic pancreatitis, thus ansa pancreatica is an under-reported disease entity (1,(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8). As comprehensive evaluation of the pancreatic duct variation by imaging such as computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is extremely important in order to correctly guide the next management steps, radiologists should be aware of this rare disease entity.…”
