Another turn after ANT: An interview with Bruno Latour

Abstract: This is a review, or preview, in the form of an interview, of Bruno Latour's forthcoming book, An Inquiry into Modes of Existence. We discuss his intellectual trajectory leading up to actor-network theory and the pluralistic philosophy underlying his new, 'positive' anthropology of modernity.

“…In this way, the study is inspired by Latour (2005), along with other studies on accounting as technology. As such, it contains an analysis of units in a network and how these units are stabilised by measures and techniques as well as how these units relate to each other (Justesen and Mouritsen 2011;Barter and Bebbington 2013;Tresch 2013). Moreover, accounting can become a technology that creates a space where the members' opinions are invited together with local adaptions of solutions (Tresch 2013).…”

Moreover, accounting can become a technology that creates a space where the members' opinions are invited together with local adaptions of solutions (Tresch 2013). Furthermore, this perspective makes it possible to analyse accounting not only as a tool used by humans but also as a technology doing something.…”

“…But if we do take them seriously, as I believe we should, these statements add up to an internally coherent and innovative ontology that conflicts with some of the most basic assumptions of most varieties of realism. This paper does not engage with the history of the development of Latour's ideas, which is already well documented (Harman 2009;Latour 2013b;Tresch 2013). Instead, it begins by forefronting the oddness of some of ANT's intriguing claims about reality.…”
