Anomalies associated with Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome

Abstract: All of the associated ocular and systemic anomalies appeared to arise from the maldevelopment of the neural crest cells. Patients with Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome should therefore be examined for the presence of anomalies in the tissues of neural crest origin. Patients with hypoplasia of the iris should be checked for glaucoma.

“…These abnormalities are especially of the teeth, facial bones, and periumbilical skin. In the study of Ozeki et al, accompanying systemic anomalies included dental anomalies (43%), facial anomalies (24%), and Alagille syndrome (14%) in the 21 patients with ARS [7]. Anal stenosis and imperforate anus are also the defects associated with ARS [8].…”

“…An interesting study, conducted to elucidate the associated anomalies in ARS, has been performed by Ozeki et al [1999], who evaluated 21 patients affected by ARS, with ages ranging from 1-41 years. All patients had glaucoma, which was bilateral in 17 cases and unilateral in 4 cases, associated with dental anomalies in 9 cases, facial anomalies in 5 cases, and Alagille syndrome in 3 cases [Ozeki et al, 1999]. Cunningham et al [1998] described ARA coexisting with atrial septal defects and sensorineural hearing loss, affecting multiple members of a single family.…”
