Annual banned‐substance review: analytical approaches in human sports drug testing

Abstract: Monitoring the misuse of drugs and the abuse of substances and methods potentially or evidently improving athletic performance by analytical chemistry strategies is one of the main pillars of modern anti-doping efforts. Owing to the continuously growing knowledge in medicine, pharmacology, and (bio)chemistry, new chemical entities are frequently established and developed, various of which present a temptation for sportsmen and women due to assumed/attributed beneficial effects of such substances and preparatio… Show more

“…This construction of the device allowed combining several electrochemical (bio)sensors and operating them depending on needs. An interesting area for the development of MSAs based on electrochemical detection system is monitoring of the banned compounds in blood samples of the athletes according the anti-doping rules [ 101 ]. However, to the best of our knowledge, no MSAs or e-tongues have been suggested for this application.…”

“…Studies in which both methods were used have shown that under-reporting of cannabis use presents a significant risk of bias in self-report use studies. 15 Cannabis is prohibited in sport (according to WADA) during the in-competition period only, which needs to be considered in the interpretation of self-reporting and antidoping analytic data.…”

“…In doping control analysis, the demand for modern analytical strategies with fast turnaround, high sensitivity, and selectivity in complex matrices is a major concern. The number of forbidden substances and/or metabolites on the WADA List that should be monitored has grown continuously over the last several years, , reaching approximately 250 entities. In addition, all these compounds possess very diverse physicochemical properties (e.g., polarity, molecular weight, and acido-basic properties).…”
