Annual banned‐substance review: Analytical approaches in human sports drug testing

Abstract: A number of high profile revelations concerning anti‐doping rule violations over the past 12 months have outlined the importance of tackling prevailing challenges and reducing the limitations of the current anti‐doping system. At this time, the necessity to enhance, expand, and improve analytical test methods in response to the substances outlined in the World Anti‐Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List represents an increasingly crucial task for modern sports drug testing programs. The ability to improve analyt… Show more

“…The most important aim in anti-doping research is to improve test methods enabling the detection of prohibited substances and continuous updating of existing analytical procedures. 21 Therefore, it is important to develop methods for the identification and estimation of concentrations of compounds which are similar to known prohibited substances. 16,[22][23][24] Thus, the interpretation of estimated concentration of higenamine should be further discussed.…”

“…11,12 USG has been extensively used as an alternative renal dilution factor to creatinine in toxicological applications, as well as in the field of doping control. 13 Indeed, in doping laboratories, this value is used to adjust concentrations of endogenous and exogenous substances in urine samples, [14][15][16][17][18][19][20] and critically, this value is mandatory by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in its accredited laboratories. Importantly, urine density, which is a useful measure of total urine (g/L), is based not only on the quantity, but also on the molecular mass of solute particles.…”

“…[2][3][4][5][6] The black market for AAS is expanding due to a higher consumer demand. 7 The products sold on the black market are often counterfeit and adulterated. In many cases, they contain different active pharmaceutical ingredients in lower or higher doses than declared on the label.…”
