Annona muricata prevent hepatic fibrosis by enhancing lysosomal membrane stability and suppressing extracellular matrix protein accumulation

Abstract: Background: Hepatic fibrosis is a pre-pathologic state of cirrhosis, which plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This study was carried out to evaluate the hepatoprotective effect of Annona muricata leaves on extracellular matrix (ECM) accumulation, lysosomal membrane integrity and liver damage in dimethylnitrosamine (DMN)-induced fibrotic rats. Methods: Healthy adult male wistar rats were divided into four groups. Group I rats received normal saline and served as control,… Show more

“…In this study, administration of soursop leaf aqueous extract at all doses inhibited the increase in cardiac collagen density in rats with HFHF diet induction significantly compared to the obesity group (OG) (p<0.05). These results are following research by Usunomena et al (2016) which explains that the content of acetogenins, flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, and vitamin C in soursop leaves is capable of suppressing the formation of fibrosis in the liver by suppressing the accumulation of extracellular matrix, increasing lysosomal membrane stability and the ability to hepatic synthesis. Meanwhile, in the study of Balderrama et al (2008), it was stated that the polyphenol content was able to regulate the lipid profile and reduce liver fibrosis.…”

“…[21] Nine studies investigated the effects of A. muricata leaf extract on liver function. [16,18,[25][26][27][28][29][30][31] Among the studies investigating hepatic effects, eight studies demonstrated a hepatoprotective effect of A. muricata leaf extracts [16,18,[25][26][27][28]30,31] while one study demonstrated a hepatotoxic effect with no substantial differences in the dose, formulation or route of administration. [29] Three in-vitro and one animal study identified neurotoxic effects (n = 4), [32][33][34][35] with the animal study using annonacin at a dose of 3.8-7.6 mg/kg per day when administrated intravenously to rats for 28 days.…”
