Annealing Effects on XLPE Insulation of Retired High-Voltage Cable

Abstract: In this paper, the performance of several annealing methods on three retired cables and the annealing effects on the improvement in the thermal and electrical properties of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation were discussed. The cable insulation layer was peeled, and the peels near the inner semi-conductive layer were used as the test samples. Isothermal treatment and heat recycling treatment were performed at temperatures of 85, 90, 95, and 100 • C, and the temperatures were held in the heat recycling… Show more

“…Hence, there is direct correlation between the electrical breakdown strength and the lamellar thickness. Similarly, the enhancement in the treeing resistance, lower permittivity, and reduced DC conductivity due to the higher value of the crystallinity are reported elsewhere .…”

“…Therefore, we may admit the crystal structure changes on XLPE should be in the light of the features of different laying modes. For more precision on the objective to analyze the crystal structure changes among the specimens, the crystallinity percentage and the grain size are introduced by Formulas (5) and (6). From Figure 10, it can be noticed remarkably that a turnover phenomenon occurs in the thermal aging of tunnel mode, which is reflected by the fact that the crystal of the (110) lattice plane modifies into the (200) lattice plane.…”
