The introductory article to the special issue dedicated to Igor Mel’čuk summarizes the main tenets of his “Meaning ⇔ Text” theory, and outlines its contribution to the development of diverse areas of modern linguistics. This theory can be characterized as a formalized, semantically oriented, multilevel, structural, functional and global model of language which explains the way the speaker generates the meaning embodied in the text. Both the article and the volume as a whole show the relevance of this theory for the development of semantics, grammar, pragmatics, typology and lexicography and highlight its theoretical and practical implications for linguistic studies and interdisciplinary research. We then briefly present the articles in this issue. Some of them were written directly in line with the “Meaning ⇔ Text theory” and were influenced by Mel’čuk’s ideas; others were the result of the stimulus that this theory, like its author, gave to the comprehension of the complex issues arising from the description of various levels of the language system. But all of them are related to Igor Mel’čuk, both as a linguist and a personality, and they are dedicated to him.

This study proposes Natural Semantic Metalanguage semantic explications for the English words virus (in two senses), bacteria, germs, and for the related words sick, ill, and disease. We concentrate on their nave or folk meanings (Apresjan 1992) in everyday English, as opposed to scientific or semi-scientific meanings. In this way, the paper makes a start on uncovering the folk epidemiology embedded in the English lexicon. The semantics of words like virus, bacteria and germs is not, however, a purely academic matter. It is also a matter of effective health education and health communication. To reach people at a time of an epidemic, explanations need to connect with ordinary peoples ways of thinking and speaking. This paper argues that the simple and cross-translatable words of NSM, and minimal languages based on it, can be effective tools not only for linguistic semantics but also for education and communication everywhere - at the local school and in the world at large.

“…Thus, due to its characteristics, the invective is studied through such notions as "verbal aggression" (Kolmakova & Shalkov, 2017), "communicative pressure", "moral influence" (Zhelvis, 2015). The legal basis of the invective is studied in such aspects as the communicative code (Gladkova & Larina, 2018;Wierzbicka, 1992) or the axiological code of the linguistic personality and, of course, the analysis of the language of law, where the results of the research on the invective find the practical application in compiling linguistic expertise on cases, related to the personality insult (Brinev, 2019;Posidelova, 2016). Problems and diagnostics of the invective in the legal aspect in Russia are handled by the specialists of the Guild of Linguistic Experts in Documentation and Information Disputes (Guild of Linguistic Experts in Documentation and Information Disputes, 2020) and the specialists of the "Jurislinguistics" laboratory, its employees issue a periodical scientific journal on this problem in Barnaul.…”
