Anisotropy in the laser performance of NdP5O14

Abstract: We report, for the first time in a biaxial laser material, on the distribution of fluorescence cross sections in the index ellipsoid. The largest effective fluorescence cross section of pure NdP5O14 at room temperature (2.0±0.1) ×10−19 cm2 for light at 1.0512 μ wavelength polarized parallel to the 2 axis which coincides with the crystallographic b axis. We predict from the cross sections the cw thresholds and polarizations of the four highest-gain laser transitions and verify the results quantitatively by oper… Show more

“…There are three emission bands corresponding to the 4 F 3/2 -4 I j transitions, which are observed in the 850-987, 1028-1173 and 1310-1421 nm ranges with peaks at 911, 1074 and 1351 nm, respectively. The emission cross-section, s em , at 1074 nm was determined from the following formula [19]:…”

“…In the fluorescence spectra three emission bands corresponding to the 4 F 3/2 → 4 I 9/2 , 4 I 11/2 and 4 I 13/2 transitions are observed at 860-940, 1036-1120, 1320-1405 nm. The emission cross-section em of both crystals can be calculated using the following formula [34]:…”

“…The calculated phenomenological intensity parameters (Ω λ ), radiative transition rates (Α r ), total radiative lifetimes (T r ), and the branching ratios (β) are listed in table 2. For lines with Lorentz line shape, the stimulated emission cross-section, σ em , for the transition 3 F 3/2 → 4 I J (J = 9/2, 11/2, 13/2, 15/2) was estimated using the formula (Huber et al 1975) …”
