Anionic Polymer Brushes for Biomimetic Calcium Phosphate Mineralization—A Surface with Application Potential in Biomaterials

Abstract: This article describes the synthesis of anionic polymer brushes and their mineralization with calcium phosphate. The brushes are based on poly(3-sulfopropyl methacrylate potassium salt) providing a highly charged polymer brush surface. Homogeneous brushes with reproducible thicknesses are obtained via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. Mineralization with doubly concentrated simulated body fluid yields polymer/inorganic hybrid films containing AB-Type carbonated hydroxyapatite (CHAP), a ma… Show more

“…C=O stretching vibration was depicted at 1726 cm -1 [37], and the band at 1450 cm -1 was attributed to saturated ester [38]. This spectrum has shown C−H asymmetric deformation of CH 3 at 1485 cm -1 and C −H symmetric deformation of CH 3 at 1475 cm -1 [30]. The signals at 1190 cm -1 and 1041 cm -1 were assigned to symmetric stretching vibration and asymmetric stretching vibration of the SO 3 group [30].…”

“…The fractions of O and Ti increase slightly with increasing sample depth until a plateau is reached at around 500 s. The atomic concentrations of around 30% for Ti and around 60% for O indicate the presence of TiO 2 . In contrast the atomic concentrations of C, N, and Au are much lower and further decrease with increasing sample depth, indicating that Au and possibly silk are slightly enriched directly on the surface [ 71 ].…”

“…Among the various types of bioinorganic matter, calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) is one of the most studied [11][12][13][14]. The mechanisms of nucleation and crystal growth of bioinorganic matter in twodimensional reaction fields such as peptide monolayers [15,16], polymer brushes modified onto substrates [17,18], polymer solutions [19][20][21], and hydrogel/solution interfaces [22,23] have been extensively investigated. The hierarchical nanohybrid structure composed of bioinorganic matter with a biomacromolecular assembly endows biominerals with a wide variety of features, such as superior mechanical properties and structural color.…”
