Anionic Diversity in Iodobismuthate Chemistry

Abstract: Three salts containing different iodobismuthate anions have been synthesized. [(CH 3 ) 2 NH 2 ] 3 [BiI 6 ] was prepared by oxidation of bismuth by iodine in N,N-dimethylformamide. [(CH 3 ) 2 NH 2 ] 3 [BiI 6 ] crystallizes in the space group R3 with a ϭ 30.760(3) Å and c ϭ 8.8039(5) Å and contains monomeric [BiI 6 ] 3Ϫ anions. The hydrate Na 4 [Bi 2 I 10 ] · 14H 2 O was prepared by the oxidation of bismuth using iodine in acetonitrile in the presence of NaI. Na 4 [Bi 2 I 10 ] · 14H 2 O crystallizes in the space… Show more

“…Thinks to this structure, the cluster composed of one BiI 6 octahedra surrounded by three dimethylamine cations is perfect to model the system. The atomic coordinates for calculations were obtained from the X-ray data [11]. First, the geometry optimization was performed using the PM3 method.…”

“…In particular, many details of the electronic structure are still unknown. In a previous study the crystal structure of tri (dimetylammonium) hexa-iodobismuthate [(CH 3 ) 2 NH 2 ] 3 [BiI 6 ], as an organic-inorganic natural self assembled 0-D compound, has been published by Martin Lindsjö and Andreas Fischer [11]. This compound crystallizes in a rhombohedra space group R 3 with general chemical formula (C 6 H 24 N 3 BiI 6 ).…”

“…It took five more decades to explore the binary phase diagrams and to develop the chemistry of bismuth‐rich compounds. Today, the polyhedral polycations Bi 5 + ,, Bi 5 3+ , Bi 6 2+ ,, Bi 8 2+ , Bi 9 5+ ,, and Bi 10 4+[23–38] are known, either as homoatomic entities or as parts of bismuth‐rich intermetalloid clusters additionally including electron‐rich transition metal atoms. This provided the basis for a detailed understanding of the structural and bonding principles in such clusters …”
