Anion‐Directed Template Synthesis and Hydrolysis of Mono‐Condensed Schiff Base of 1,3‐Pentanediamine and o‐Hydroxyacetophenone in NiII and CuII Complexes

Abstract: (6), respectively (Hhap = o-hydroxyacetophenone and pn = 1,3-pentanediamine). The ligand HL undergoes hydrolysis also on reaction with Ni(ClO 4 ) 2 ·6H 2 O or Ni(NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O to yield [Ni(hap) 2 ] (7). The structures of the complexes 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7 have been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis. In complex 2, Ni II possesses square-planar geometry, being coordinated by the tridentate mono-negative Schiff base, L and the isothiocyanate group.

“…However, the synthesis and characterization of the free ligand by Elder's method [1], followed by the procedure used by Burke and McMillin [2] remained unsuccessful. The reason of this failure could be explained by the assumption of Ghosh et al [4]. According to Ghosh et al, formation of a tridentate mono-condensed Schiff base by Elder's method is possible only when it forms six or seven member chelate ring with nickel(II).…”

“…The ligands could then be used to form copper(II) complexes [3]. This method fails to prepare the mono-condensed Schiff base from 1,2-diaminoethane and salicylaldehyde derivatives [4]. Copper(II) complexes of such ligands could therefore be obtained with the help of the copper(II) template effect [5][6][7][8][9][10].…”

“…The electrochemical behavior and the data are in agreement with those reported for the complexes closely related to each copper center in this compound. [24][25] To the best of our knowledge, the large difference between the redox potentials of the two copper centers (1.21 V) with different coordination geometries in a polymeric complex is an interesting case reported for the first time. …”

“…The Ni-O and Ni-N bond lengths are comparable to those observed in similar nickel(II) complexes with Schiff bases. 18,19 In the crystal structure of the complex, the nickel complex cations and the nitrate anions are linked through intermolecular N-H···N and N-H···O hydrogen bonds, to form 2D sheet (Figure 2). Figure 3 gives perspective view of complex (2) together with the atomic labeling system.…”
