The purpose of this study is to assess the quantity and quality of myopia related articles from 2001 to 2021 using bibliometric methods. The number of published articles and citations, the correlation analysis between gross domestic product (GDP) and annual publication number and citations was investigated. The proportion of myopia articles from East Asia accounted for 55.28% in 2021. The researchers from China published the most articles on myopia during 2001 to 2021, followed by Japan and South Korea. The annual number of articles and citations from China and South Korea showed an exponential increase with strong positive correlation with GDP. All 3 countries in East Asia are mainly researching refractive surgery, prevalence, and glaucoma, and research on children’s myopia is particularly active in China, and in Japan. The researchers from East Asia published more than half of articles on myopia since 2019, in order of China, Japan, and South Korea. The annual number of articles and citations from China and South Korea showed an exponential increase with strong positive correlation with GDP whereas those from Japan did not. All 3 countries are mainly researching refractive surgery, and glaucoma, and research on children’s myopia is particularly active in China, and in Japan.

PurposeTo assess the generalisability and performance of a deep learning classifier for automated detection of gonioscopic angle closure in anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) images.MethodsA convolutional neural network (CNN) model developed using data from the Chinese American Eye Study (CHES) was used to detect gonioscopic angle closure in AS-OCT images with reference gonioscopy grades provided by trained ophthalmologists. Independent test data were derived from the population-based CHES, a community-based clinic in Singapore, and a hospital-based clinic at the University of Southern California (USC). Classifier performance was evaluated with receiver operating characteristic curve and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) metrics. Interexaminer agreement between the classifier and two human examiners at USC was calculated using Cohen’s kappa coefficients.ResultsThe classifier was tested using 640 images (311 open and 329 closed) from 127 Chinese Americans, 10 165 images (9595 open and 570 closed) from 1318 predominantly Chinese Singaporeans and 300 images (234 open and 66 closed) from 40 multiethnic USC patients. The classifier achieved similar performance in the CHES (AUC=0.917), Singapore (AUC=0.894) and USC (AUC=0.922) cohorts. Standardising the distribution of gonioscopy grades across cohorts produced similar AUC metrics (range 0.890–0.932). The agreement between the CNN classifier and two human examiners (Ҡ=0.700 and 0.704) approximated interexaminer agreement (Ҡ=0.693) in the USC cohort.ConclusionAn OCT-based deep learning classifier demonstrated consistent performance detecting gonioscopic angle closure across three independent patient populations. This automated method could aid ophthalmologists in the assessment of angle status in diverse patient populations.

Training needs of German healthcare professionals regarding sexual health and sex workers: Results of a nationwide, cross-sectional survey

Background Sexual health is an important aspect of human well-being. In terms of sexual health and healthcare, sex workers might need more specialized care than others, given their higher risk for both discrimination and various sexually transmitted diseases. Yet, however, little is known about the quality of healthcare professionals’ training regarding sexual health and healthcare of sex workers in Germany. Methods In an online survey, 130 physicians, 63 psychotherapists, and 154 medical students reported their perceived quality of training regarding sexual health problems in all their patients and regarding sex workers’ health issues specifically. Results A substantial share of respondents reported to have experienced inadequate training regarding both sexual health problems in general and specific issues concerning sex workers. However, most respondents reported feeling rather comfortable when dealing with these topics. There was a positive correlation between feeling comfortable when treating sexual health problems/ sex workers and the perceived training on these topics. Conclusions The results of this study indicate that sexual health issues and sex workers’ specific healthcare requirements are not sufficiently addressed in the curricula of German healthcare professionals. Future adaptations of these curricula might be necessary.
