Angiosarcoma of the Breast

Abstract: With the increasing use of breast conservation therapy for breast cancer, reports of postirradiation angiosarcoma have increased. Both primary and secondary angiosarcomas may present with bruiselike skin discoloration, which may delay the diagnosis. Imaging findings are nonspecific. MRI may be used to determine lesion extent by showing rapid enhancement and washout in high-grade tumors.

“…In the literature, the imaging findings of angiosarcomas have been reported in case reports or case series, and there are not any specific imaging findings. On mammography, if seen at all, they may present as ill-defined masses with or without calcifications (2). On US, hyperechoic solid masses with accompanying tubular structures or hypoechoic masses have been reported previously.…”

“…Although AS can present anywhere in the body, in humans they typically arise in the skin or superficial soft tissues. It is most frequently noted on the face and scalp of elderly men where their persistent growth causes ulceration and infection, as well as on breasts, and extremities (Brennan et al 2001;Fayette et al 2007;Glazebrook et al 2008). Less frequently AS arises in liver, heart, and spleen (Young et al 2010).…”
