Angiomatous lymphoid‐tissue hyperplasia

Abstract: polyethylene glycol may be related to its known effect of potentiating the lytic action of complement on antibody-coated tumour cells in vitro, but other factors, such as the state of the reticulo-endothelial system, may also need to be taken into consideration. REFERENCES HARTVEIT, FLORA . PLATES LXIV AND LXV CASTLEMAN, I V E R S O N A N D M E N E N D E Z (1956) collected 13 benign tumour-like lesions of lymph-node origin localised in the mediastinum and published them under the designation " Localized medias… Show more

“…The hyaline vascular type is often very vascular and bleeds readily during surgery. It seems to be related to the vascular proliferation seen microscopically (Castleman et al, 1956;Cheen, 1957;Krasznai and Juhasz, 1969;Mackay, 1969;Tung and McCormack, 1967). The term angiofollicular is coined because of the characteristic vascularity of the lesion.…”

“…Whether, in the light of Flendrig's separation of cases into two clinical and morphological groups, this will prove to be two diseases or one it is too early to say, but Krasznai and Juhasz (1969) describe a case cured of thrombopoenia whose lesion appears to correspond with the symptomless type. Certainly until more is known about this lesion it is wiser to document all cases together.…”

“…Castleman's disease has many synonyms in the litera ture, new terminology evolving with additional under standing of the condition and new hypotheses as to its etiology [7], Localized nodal hyperplasia [6], angioma tous lymph node hyperplasia [8], lymphoid hamartoma [9] and giant lymph node hyperplasia [10] are included, just to name a few. This disease has no predilection for age or sex [11], and usually presents as an asymptomatic mediastinal mass found on routine chest X-ray [6, 9, Two distinct histologic subtypes of Castleman's dis ease are identified: the hyaline vascular type and the plasma cell type [7], The plasma cell type comprises only 9% of total cases and is more likely to present with con stitutional symptoms [10], such as chronic refractory anemia, fever and hypergammaglobulinemia [10,13].…”
