Angiogenic Imbalance and Inflammatory Biomarkers in the Prediction of Hypertension as Well as Obstetric and Perinatal Complications in Women with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) increases the risk of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP). We aimed to analyze the altered inflammatory markers and angiogenic factors among women with GDM to identify pregnant women at higher risk of developing HDP. Methods: This was a prospective study of 149 women without hypertension diagnosed in the third trimester with GDM. Inflammatory markers and angiogenic factors were measured at 28–32 weeks of pregnancy. Obstetric and perinatal outcomes were evaluated. Resul… Show more

“…Women with a positive screening test with a 1-h blood glucose > 140 mg/dL (7.7 mmol/L) underwent a confirmatory 3-h, 100 g—OGTT. GDM is diagnosed with two abnormally high values of the following thresholds: fasting glucose level ≥ 105 mg/dL (5.8 mmol/L); 1-h, ≥190 mg/dL (10.5 mmol/L); 2-h, ≥165 mg/dL (9.1 mmol/L); 3-h, ≥145 mg/dL (8.0 mmol/L) [ 103 , 104 ].…”

“…Several authors have studied the association between adiponectin and preeclampsia and found conflicting results. Most studies report an increase of adiponectin in the third trimester of gestation in patients with preeclampsia compared to control ( Pérez-Pérez et al, 2020 ; Pheiffer et al, 2021 ; Lara-Barea et al, 2022 ), while others found the Other adipokines such as resistin, visfatin and vaspin in gestational diabetes and preeclampsia have been described but their physiological role has yet to be established and work has been more descriptive regarding these other adipokines ( Miehle et al, 2012 ). In pregnant women plasma levels of resistin are elevated compared to non-pregnant women, however in gestational diabetes there are inconsistent data in the literature with some studies demonstrating elevation of resistin while others found decreased levels.…”

“…Before compared to after 34 weeks of gestation, both assays performed better. Lara-Barea et al (12) reported that higher levels of the (sFlt-1/PIGF) ratio were associated with a 2.7fold increased risk of developing HDP in women.…”
