Angiogenesis in Oral Lichen Planus: A Comparative Study with Lesions of Different Degrees of Aggressiveness

Abstract: Background:The immunodetection of VEGF, ANG-1 and 2 was investigated in oral lichen planus (OLP) and in control groups to compare angiogenesis between lesions with different degrees of aggressiveness. Methods:A cross-sectional observational study was performed in 21 reticular (ROLP) and 11 atrophicerosive (AEOLP) specimens of OLP and in 10 cases of oral fibroepithelial hyperplasia (OFH), oral epithelial dysplasia (OED) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Results:The results do not revealed significant dif… Show more

“…Data regarding the quantitative assessment of angiogenesis from 21 studies 13–16,18,19,21–25,29–37,40 has been elaborated in Table S3. Thirteen 13,14,16,19,21,23,31–36,40 assessed the angiogenic status by calculating the microvessel density (MVD).…”

“…Twelve out of thirteen studies mentioned about the method of measurement out of which seven calculated MVD in 5 hotspot areas at 20× magnification, while the remaining five chose 40× with 3, 36 4 16,21,23 and 5 31 hotspot areas for evaluation, respectively. The mean area percent value and positively stained cells were evaluated in six studies 15,22,24,25,29,35 using VEGF, VEGFR2, Vasohibin, CD34, ALK1, ANG‐1, and ANG‐2 markers. Two studies 25,35 assessed 10 (equidistant/successive) fields at 20× magnification while another four employed various microvascular compartments, 22 five 22,24 hotspots and three 29 random fields at 20× and 40× magnification, respectively.…”

“…Payers et al 7 recently investigated immunodetection of ANG‐1, ANG‐2, and VEGF as well as the blood vessel number in samples in samples from patients with OLP and other; immunodetection of ANG‐2 was not significantly different among samples of OLP (divided into specimens from patients with reticular, atrophic, or erosive OLP), oral fibroepithelial hyperplasia, oral epithelial dysplasia, and oral squamous cell carcinoma. They found that the angiogenesis factors were similarly immunodetected in both the OLP and oral epithelial dysplasia groups, demonstrating that OLP angiogenesis may act similar to that of oral epithelial dysplasia.…”

“… 4,5 Studies have investigated the angiogenesis process in OLP, which is characterized by rich vascularization that is probably due to hypoxia from lymphocyte's proliferation 6 . Recent studies showed an increase in VEGF expression and in micro‐vessel density in OLP, particularly in the erosive type, suggesting that angiogenesis can play a distinct role in the different clinical presentations of lichen disease 7 …”
