Angelica Essential Oil Loaded Electrospun Gelatin Nanofibers for Active Food Packaging Application

Abstract: The development of food packaging possessing bioactivities which could extend the shelf life of food has gained increased interest in recent years. In this study, gelatin nanofibers with encapsulated angelica essential oil (AEO) were fabricated via electrospinning. The morphology of gelatin/AEO nanofibers was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the addition of AEO resulted in the increase of fiber diameter. The proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectra were measured to confirm the prese… Show more

“…Other biodegradable films containing EOs have been tested in different food matrices such as fruits (i.e., strawberries), prolonging their shelf-life but also preventing or reducing the growth of bacterial colonies and acting as fungicides [46]. Additionally, the active biodegradable films containing encapsulated EOs showed no cytotoxicity while they permitted to maintain the sensorial properties of the food products during storage [47].…”

“…herb, known in Chinese as Dong-gui, has been shown to have excellent antibacterial and antioxidant activities that could be useful as a possible bioactive ingredient in food packaging. Zhou et al fabricated gelatin (GEL) nanofibers loaded with different concentrations (0%, 3%, 6%, and 9%) of angelica essential oil (AEO) through electrospinning [ 273 ]. In general, as the viscosity increased, the nanofiber diameter also increased due to less stretching of fiber.…”

“…There are incompatible flavors and tastes with certain food as presented in Table 2. Gelatin based electrospun films are exploited in the development of food packaging materials, their loading with essential oils, such as angelica essential oil are very useful because they induce antimicrobial activity, reduce the wettability, and enhance the water vapor barrier, which, overall means a safer food packaging film and extended shelf-life [112].…”
