Anemia is associated with cognitive impairment in adolescent girls: A cross-sectional survey

Abstract: Anemia is associated with impairment in oxygen transport, affecting an individual's physical and mental wellbeing, and work performance. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of anemia and its possible association with serum antibody titers to Hsp27 (as an indicator of cellular stress), cognitive function, measures of emotion, sleep patterns in adolescent girls. A total of 940 adolescent girls were assessed to evaluate neuropsychological function with validated questionnaires. A complete blood co… Show more

“…In females, neuroticism PGS was associated with lower mean corpuscular volume and lower red blood cell distribution width, two powerful biomarkers of anemia (51,52). The relationship between anemia and mental health is strong with studies across the lifespan correlating anemia and greater depressive symptoms (53) and cognitive impairment (54). A study of >50,000 individuals demonstrated that iron-deficient anemias associated with an adjusted hazard ratio of 1.49 and 1.47 for depressive and anxiety disorders, respectively.…”

“…The gender female was also an independent risk factor of anemia, which is in line with previous studies [ 50 , 51 ]. It is noteworthy that anemia among schoolchildren may lead to impaired cognitive function [ 52 ]. No significant association was found between S .…”

“…Anemia is an important health problem in both developing and developed countries [ 60 ]. It is associated with the impairment of oxygen transport [ 61 ] and affects the physical and mental well-being of an individual [ 62 ]. One of the Global Nutrition Targets 2025 set by the WHO is a 50% reduction in the prevalence of anemia among women of childbearing age by the year 2025 [ 63 ].…”
