Androgenetic alopecia: Hair transplantation surgery update

Abstract

Androgenetic alopecia is the main cause of hair loss in men and women and it can have a negative impact on quality of life due to decreased self‐esteem. The possibility of restoration of large areas with natural results is making hair transplantation surgery increasingly popular. Since the first surgeries dissecting the follicular units under the microscope, there has been much advancement in hair transplantation surgery in recent decades. In this review, we discuss the main techniques for harvesting follicular units from the donor area and for implantation. When properly indicated, using appropriate techniques and performed by a trained surgeon, hair transplant surgery can lead to excellent results with highly satisfied patients.
