Androctonus genus species in arid regions: Ecological niche models, geographical distributions, and envenomation risk

Abstract: Aim:The objective of this study was to establish environmental factors related to scorpion species occurrence and their current potential geographic distributions in Morocco, to produce a current envenomation risk map and also to assess the human population at risk of envenomation.Materials and Methods:In this study, 71 georeferenced points for all scorpion species and nine environmental indicators were used to generate species distribution models in Maxent (maximum entropy modeling of species geographic distr… Show more

“…Another medically important species, A . bicolor , is distributed across a wide geographical range from NA to the ME (as far as Morocco in the west and Syria in the east) [ 95 ]. However, human contact with this scorpion appears to be rare [ 78 ].…”

“…However, the chemical and pharmacological properties of their venoms are still poorly studied, compared to what is currently known about the Androctonus australis and Androctonus mauretanicus venoms. The three Pasteur Institutes in Maghreb have largely added to our knowledge of the Androctonus mauretanicus and Androctonus australis venoms, their main objective being the production of specific and efficient antivenoms for serotherapy purposes [ 10 , 11 , 12 ].…”

“…However, the mean diurnal range, slope, wettest quarter precipitation, and warmest quarter were associated with A. liouvillei distribution. While A. amoreuxi was related to the mean temperature of the driest quarter, mean diurnal range, and slope [46]. In this study, according to the MaxEnt modeling, the important climatic factor in the presence of H. lepturus was the maximum temperature of the warmest month.…”

“…The area under an ROC curve was calculated 0.950±0.025, 0.988±0.006, and 0.969±0.007 for A. amoreuxi, A. liouvillei, and A. mauritanicus, respectively [46]. Brites-Neto and Duarte [38] reported AUC=0.7698±0.0533 for Tityus serrulatus and pointed to high predictive success.…”
