Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate how open, mediatised conflict in geographical indications (GIs) can provide the basis for differentiation strategies for heritage producers based on both functional and symbolic benefits. Design/methodology/approach Longitudinal case study based on multiple data sources, which reconstructs the history of the Bitto GIs and the conflict between the Protected Designation of Origin Bitto Consortium and a small number of heritage Bitto producers. Findings The paper highlights how the mediatised narration of conflict can contribute to raise consumer awareness, differentiate products and result in symbolic value creation. Research limitations/implications Extreme case study design purposively chosen as characterised by conditions likely to accentuate conflict. Practical implications The paper develops a conceptual framework that permits to identify the potential for conflict inside GIs. It also contributes to a better understanding of the image of products protected by GIs and the role played by heritage producers. It also offers practical advice on two promotional tools, namely, trade fair participations and experiential showcases. Social implications The paper offers practical advice on the safeguarding of small producers localised in cultural epicentres inside GIs. Originality/value The authors introduce the notions, such as competitive wars and secession, that contribute to a better understanding of centripetal/centrifugal forces inside GIs. The authors also propose a better understanding of image creation of GIs, grounded in cultural work in marketing and consumer research.

Diversité des formes de valorisation des populations animales locales et gestion des ressources génétiques animales / 439INRA Productions Animales, 2012, numéro 5 Un certain nombre de ressources génétiques animales sont mobilisées dans des démarches de valorisation qui représentent un enjeu fort et ne sont pas sans conséquence sur la façon dont ces ressources sont gérées. Nous montrons, en mobilisant des exemples de valorisation de races locales, combien il est important d'étendre les recherches aux formes de valorisation autres que sous formes de Signes Officiels de Qualité (SOQ) territorialisés. Le cas de la Bretonne Pie Noir, par exemple, invite à considérer les produits valorisés en dehors des SOQ et celui de la brebis Solognote invite à considérer la mobilisation de ces races pour la gestion d'espaces spécifiques. D'une manière générale, les avancées dans les travaux de recherche sur les interactions entre races locales et produits sous AOP invitent à étendre le questionnement à d'autres formes de valorisation, qui posent différemment la question de l'interaction, et qui ne sont pas sans réinterroger la gestion génétique des races. Nous discutons les spécificités de démarche qu'implique pour la recherche le fait d'aborder l'ensemble de ces formes de valorisation. Résumé Abstract Different ways to valorise local breeds and management of animal genetic resourcesAnimal genetic resources can be involved in valorisation with strong stakes and consequences on resource management. In this paper we show that it is necessary to take into account the various ways to add value to local breeds, for instance products without PDO (see the Bretonne Pie Noir breed case) or landscape management (see the Solognote breed case). Indeed, the results of research concerning interactions between local breed management and PDO products show different consequences of such projects on local breeds but we show that other ways of adding value must be considered (food products, without PDO, specific livestock farming system, landscape management, non food products etc.). Alors que la protection de la propriété intellectuelle est habituellement considérée comme un sujet clé pour l’entrepreneur innovateur, la recherche analyse le faible engouement des entrepreneurs du secteur informel pour la protection formelle de l’innovation. Les données ont été collectées par entretiens semi-directifs réalisés avec des entrepreneurs-innovateurs du secteur informel au Burkina Faso. Les résultats montrent que le scepticisme ambiant, en ce qui concerne la capacité des titres formels à éviter l’imitation, incite les entrepreneurs-innovateurs du secteur informel à préférer la protection informelle ou l’invention collective. Outre qu’elles permettent à l’entrepreneur-innovateur de tirer profit de son travail d’innovation, certaines approches informelles ne sont pas de nature à remettre en cause l’altruisme qui fonde la vie sociale dans le secteur informel. D’autres approches informelles assurent une meilleure protection de l’innovation contre l’imitation mais présentent l’inconvénient de compromettre la solidarité au sein de la communauté. L’invention collective s’avère compatible avec l’altruisme qui caractérise l’innovation frugale et les relations sociales dans le secteur informel. Codes JEL : L2, M1, O3
