Ancestry-independent fate specification and plasticity in the developmental timing of a typicalDrosophilaneuronal lineage

Abstract: In the Drosophila CNS, combinatorial, interdependent, sequential genetic programs in neuroectodermal (NE) cells, prior to the formation of neuroblasts (NBs), determine the initial identity of NBs. Temporal factors are then sequentially expressed to change the temporal identity. It is unclear at what levels this positional and temporal information integrates to determine progeny cell identity. One idea is that this is a top-down linear process: the identity of a NB determines the identity of its daughter, the g… Show more

“…Previous reports have described the expression of Mid in the embryonic ectoderm, neuroblasts, and cardiomyoblasts (Buescher et al 2004;Gaziova and Bhat 2009;Leal et al 2009;Liu et al 2009;Formaz-Preston et al 2012), but did not note expression in the somatic musculature. To evaluate whether the observed muscle phenotypes correlate with Mid expression, and support the hypothesis that Mid functions in a cell autonomous manner in the musculature, we examined the pattern of Mid from stages 10-15 of myogenesis ( Figure 2).…”
