Anatomy and Surgical Approaches to the Rabbit Nasal Septum

Abstract: IMPORTANCE The rabbit is the primary animal model used to investigate aspects of nasal surgery. Although several studies have used this model, none has provided a comprehensive analysis of the surgical anatomy and techniques used to gain access to the rabbit nasal fossae and septum. OBJECTIVE To describe and optimize the surgical anatomy and approach to the rabbit nasal vault and septal cartilage. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS In an ex vivo animal study conducted at an academic medical center, preliminary … Show more

“…All nasal cartilages are hyaline and are categorized into three structures, the septum, the paired upper lateral cartilage (ULC), and paired lower lateral cartilage (LLC) ( Figure 1). Structural integrity of the nasal cartilages is crucial for proper respiratory function because the nose is the only means to provide heated, humidified, and filtered air to the lungs [16,17]. The structure of each nasal cartilage and their relationship with one another should inform the shape and size requirements of engineered neocartilage.…”

“…Several animal models are used in rhinoplasty and nose cartilage tissue-engineering studies. Rabbit models are frequently used due to their affordability and availability, and surgical procedures for rabbits are well-defined [123,124]. However, leporine nasal cartilage is significantly less cellular and has different shapes and thicknesses than human cartilage [125].…”

“…The animal model used in this study was the New Zealand White rabbit since it is widely used to model rhinoplasty (Badran et al 2017) as well as osteotomies (Stein et al 1990;€ O greden et al 2018). Seven rabbit heads were collected from the National Veterinary School of Alfort (Maisons-Alfort, France).…”

“…A 6 cm long longitudinal incision was made from the end of the 12th rib to the anterior superior iliac spine. After the exposure of the 12th rib and the 5th (L5) and 6th (L6) lumbar vertebral segments, a Kirschner wire of 3 mm in diameter was drilled at 5 mm below the upper end-plate of 6th lumbar vertebrae down to a depth of 5 mm [16]. The suspension of the live attenuated Brucella melitensis vaccine strain M5-90 (0.1 ml, 3 × 10 8 CFU/ml, Xinjiang Tiankang Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Urumqi, China) was slowly injected into the gelatin sponge (Nanjing Jinling Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Nanjing, China), and the bony canal was sealed with 0.1 ml bone wax.…”
