Anatomical study of Momordica charantia L. from Bangladesh

Abstract: Recent investigation on the root, stem, leaf and petiole anatomy of Momordica charantia L. completed the detailed anatomical study of the genus Momordica from Bangladesh. Root has tetrach vascular bundles where thick patches of sclerenchyma cells encompassed the vessel cells. Five angular ridges and furrows are visible through stem transverse section typical to Cucurbitaceae. Total nine open, bicollateral fibro-vascular bundles are observed in stem crosssection where three large are in the center and others ea… Show more

“…Regarding the mesophyll of the acclimatized Momordica charantia plants, some structural variations can also be specified. Our data certify the presence of unilayered palisade tissue in the lamina, similarly with what was reported by SÁ &SHETHI &. The research conducted by SĂVULESCU & HOZA (2010) and ERŐZ POYRAZ & DERDOVSKI (2016) supports both the existence of a uni-bilayered palisade tissue in the structure of the mesophyll.…”

“…Regarding the epidermal cells, our data, supported by the optical microscopy images, show that the cuticle of the epidermal cells of the petiole and of the lamina ribs is thick and shows obvious cuticular ridges. In the specialized literature [SĂVULESCU & HOZA, 2010;SHETHI & al. 2018 A further aspect refers to the presence of CaCO3 crystals (cystoliths) in epidermal cells.…”

“…Конфигурация черешка восьмиугольной формы с восемью гребнями, на которых кольцом расположены семь фиброзно-сосудистых пучков. Стебель и лист имеют многоклеточные, однояйцевые трихомы с тупым концом конической формы, где черешок имеет аналогичные трихомы как с тупой, так и с заостренной головкой [3].…”

“…The configuration of the petiole is octagonal in shape with eight ridges, on which seven fibrovascular bundles are arranged in a ring. The stem and leaf have multicellular, uniovate trichomes with a blunt end of a conical shape, where the petiole has similar trichomes with both a blunt and pointed head [3].…”
