Anatomical Position of Hyaluronic Acid Gel Following Injection to the Eyebrow

Abstract: This study provides a greater understanding of the anatomical barriers and boundaries that help to determine, in part, the anatomical position of hyaluronic acid gel when injected to the preperiosteal eyebrow. The high degree of histologically confirmed consistency of product location of eyebrow injections noted in this study stands in contrast to the variability of position of gel injected in the infraorbital hollows.

“…4 Injection of HA gel into cadaveric infraorbital hollows resulted in a significant portion of the material outside the intended injection plane, while injections into the eyebrow region showed a consistent preperiosteal location. 5,6 In this study, dehydration of fresh frozen cadaver skin and subcutaneous tissues could have challenged accurate injection. In live injections, the practitioner would redirect the needle more superficially when the skin does not elevate during injection.…”

“…8 Injection techniques commonly used are delivery of HA to the lateral one third of the eyebrow along the superior orbital rim to the preperiosteal plane or Retro Orbicularis Oculi Fat (ROOF) pad while using a retrograde linear threading technique. 3,6 The ROOF extends from the eyebrow to the upper lid giving shape to the eyebrow and may contribute to eyebrow ptosis, but treatment provides a smooth appropriate contour over the superior orbital rim. 6 However, the complex anatomy of the surrounding areas may pose the risk of long-term effects, especially if improper injection techniques are used.…”

“…Medical management with topical ointments with vitamin A derivate or chemical peels are recommended to take care of dyschromia and elastosis [3]. Aesthetic medicine corrections such as botulinum toxin injections and dermal fillers have been traditionally used for eyebrow lifting or skin dehydration [4][5][6][7].…”
