Anatomical characteristics and antioxidant ability of Centaurea sadleriana reveals an adaptation towards drought tolerance

Abstract: The lamina, main vein and peduncle anatomical properties of Centaurea sadleriana Janka plants from two populations, were examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. The indumentum was comprised of glandular and non-glandular trichomes of two types. The leaves were amphistomatic, isolateral, with strongly developed palisade tissue. Secretory ducts were observed along the phloem or sclerenchyma of large vascular bundles. Collenchyma alternated with chlorenchyma in the main vein and peduncle. Large gro… Show more

“…Plants with isolateral leaf structure usually grow on dry habitats with intense solar radiation, shown for the genera Aster L., Galatella Cass., Tripolium Nees. (Karanović et al 2015), most of Centaurea species (Fahn and Cutler 1992;Luković et al 2013), as well as recorded for our studied species. Also, the amphistomatic leaves are characteristic of plants growing in highly lighted habitats (Fahmy 1997).…”

“…Occurrence of cortical and medullar vascular bundles in the stems and peduncules, were also recorded as one of the main anatomical characteristics for the Centaurea spp. (Metcalfe & Chalk, 1957), as documented in Centaurea sadleriana Janka (Luković et al, 2013). Collateral cortical vascular bundles were also found in the stem of Ianthopappus corymbosus (Less.)…”

“…Species belonging to the genera Aster L., Galatella Cass. and Tripolium Nees (Karanović et al, 2015), as well as most of Centaurea species, have an isolateral leaf structure, which is characteristic for plant species which grow on dry habitats (Fahn & Cutler, 1992;Luković et al, 2013). Although Xeranthemum taxa inhabit open, insolated, arid habitats, both studied species have dorsiventral leaf structure ( Fig.…”

“…Many studies on phytochemical characterisation have been conducted (e.g. Karamenderes et al 2007;Küpeli Akkol et al 2009;Aktumsek et al 2011;Luković et al 2013), yet the structure of these species has still been poorly described. Although chemical analyses and molecular data have greatly contributed to establishment of the species phylogeny, macro-and micromorphological features are still an irreplaceable source of information for this type of study.…”

“…In turn, Chiru et al (2013) observed three types of non-glandular trichomes in C. cyanus. While, Luković et al (2013) described two types of these trichomes in Centaurea sadleriana. We have demonstrated that the glandular trichomes found on the epidermal surface of C. cyanus bracts have 6-7 tiers.…”
