Anatomic basis for a minimally invasive approach to the subtalar joint

Abstract: It has to be said, however, that this technique does not offer the opportunity of performing a corrective arthrodesis as the hindfoot cannot be displayed during surgery. As the result of this study was positive, clinical evaluation was started.

“…One of the most recent developments is a minimal invasive primary arthrodesis performed via a small posterolateral approach; after overall anatomy reconstruction through ligamentotaxis [31][32]. This technique combines the minimal invasive approach for calcaneal fractures to restore height and width with the posteolateral Gallie approach to fuse the posterior talo-calcaneal joint [44][45][46].…”

“…9,21 Nevertheless, these techniques carry the risk of wound infection, neurovascular damage, and delayed wound healing. 33 To prevent these early complications, an arthroscopic approach has been performed by other auth ors, 1,3,15,29,34 and previous clinical studies, of short followup, showed absence of infections or neurovascular damage. However, contraindications for arthroscopy are gross malalignment of the hindfoot, and significant bone loss of the talus or calcaneus.…”
