Show more

“…In all species the inflorescences are polytelic (indeterminate), as in most Cyperaceae (Alves et al 2000;Heinzen and Vegetti 1994;Guarise and Vegetti 2008;Kukkonen 1984Kukkonen , 1986Vegetti 1992Vegetti , 1994Vegetti and Tivano 1991;Vrijdaghs 2006;Vrijdaghs et al 2003Vrijdaghs et al , 2004Vrijdaghs et al , 2005aVrijdaghs et al , 2005bVrijdaghs et al , 2007, and monocotyledonous (Alves 2000;Weberling 1985). The HF is always present, thus the inflorescences are heterothetic (Rua 1999), i.e., non-truncate.…”

“…In the PZ, the acropetal reduction of the order of ramification, number, and length of the paraclades is a common feature in the family (Browning and Gordon-Gray 1999;Haines 1966;Heinzen and Vegetti 1994;Kukkonen 1984Kukkonen , 1986Vegetti 1992Vegetti , 1994Vegetti , 2003Vegetti and Tivano 1991). The phyllotaxis of normal paraclades is similar to that observed by Guarise and Vegetti (2007) for Cyperus L.…”

“…In addition, by eliminating aerial vegetation, the underground growth points are stimulated, contributing to greater and constant weed propagation (Talaka and Rajab, 2013). These functional traits are present in Commelinaceae (Nisensohn et al, 2011) and Cyperaceae (Heinzen et al, 2010) families, increasing their competitive ability, explaining why species such as Commelina erecta and Cyperus odoratus are the most frequently found and disseminated weeds in banana plantations (Table 2).…”
