Analyzing the human liver vascular architecture by combining vascular corrosion casting and micro‐CT scanning: a feasibility study

Abstract: Although a full understanding of the hepatic circulation is one of the keys to successfully perform liver surgery and to elucidate liver pathology, relatively little is known about the functional organization of the liver vasculature. Therefore, we materialized and visualized the human hepatic vasculature at different scales, and performed a morphological analysis by combining vascular corrosion casting with novel micro-computer tomography (CT) and image analysis techniques. A human liver vascular corrosion ca… Show more

“…Furthermore, Debbaut et al (12) demonstrated that the branching pattern of the artery tree is highly variable and that a dichotomous bifurcation model in which a parent artery is divided into two daughter arteries is an overly simplified version of a native hepatic artery tree. In fact, the estimated number of arteries in human livers is 100-fold higher than the number of arteries in a dichotomous bifurcation model because of parent artery division into three or more daughter arteries and the existence of small side branches that are almost perpendicular to the parent artery (12). In addition, the terminal ending of the artery tree is a complex structure, in contrast to the portal vein system where the terminal portal veins straightforwardly continue with the sinusoids into the hepatic lobule.…”
