Analytical thermal model and flow network analysis suitable for open self‐ventilated machines

Abstract: This study provides a survey on thermal and flow network analysis of open self-ventilated (OSV) machines. The improvements and new approaches proposed in the last decade are analysed in detail. The thermal analysis of OSV machines is divided into two significant steps, thermal models and flow network analysis. In the first step of this survey, the analytical thermal model approach is considered in detail. In addition, the study provides an overview of the critical parameters of an analytical thermal model and … Show more

“…The finned housing and air-cooled heat sink are the primary thermal management methods for various electric and electronic devices to evacuate the heat from these devices to air. This air-cooled approach is the desired method according to a reliable, simple, and cost-effective design [24], [25]. This cooling method enhances heat extraction by increasing the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) or/ and raising the surface area in contact with air [26].…”

“…According to the European Union target to mandatory minimizing the CO2 emissions, there is a massive interest in the research and development of the electrical motors for traction applications. The electrical motors using for electric vehicles have high power density and compact structure [1], [2]. Accordingly, the accurate thermal analysis of the electrical machine is one of the most critical sections in the design process of the electrical motors, which is playing a vital role in the performance, power density, and energy efficiency of the electrical motors.…”

“…However, to achieve cost-effectiveness and lightweight demand metrics, the automotive company starts to manufacture EV motors with compact structures that generate a few dozen kilowatts. Therefore, the standard aircooling method [6], [7], and [8] and cannot provide sufficient cooling conditions for the high-power density and compact motors; and, there is a need for novel cooling methods.…”
