Rapid urban growth in major cities of a country poses challenges for sustainable development. Particularly in Africa, the process of rapid urbanization is little understood and research is mostly limited to single cities. Thus, this study provides a comprehensive comparative analysis of the growth and spatial patterns of urban development in the three major cities of Ethiopia (Addis Ababa, Adama, and Hawassa) from 1987 to 2017. Also, the applicability of diffusion and coalescence theory on the evolution of these cities has been tested. Remote sensing and GIS technologies were combined with spatial metrics and morphological analysis was employed to undertake this study. The result revealed that all the studied cities experienced accelerated growth in the urbanized areas, but the cities with a larger initial urbanized size were associated with lower expansion rates. Differences in extent and direction of expansion in each city were mostly related to physical features, urban master plans, and policies, with an increase in the irregularity and dispersion of urban growth, representing strong evidence of urban sprawl. The spatiotemporal analysis confirmed that the urbanization processes of Addis Ababa and Adama were consistent and Hawassa city diverged from expectations based on diffusion and coalescence theory. In general, large cities with strong economic growth in a country fail to effectively control the scattered nature of urban growth, thus requiring aggressive policy intervention. The approach used in this study permits a deeper exploration of urban development patterns and the identification of priority areas for effective urban planning and management.

Abstract:The Galapagos Islands are a unique sanctuary for wildlife and have gone through a fluctuating process of urbanization in the three main inhabited islands. Despite being colonized since the 1800s, it is during the last 25 years that a dramatic increase in population has been observed. Analyzing impervious surface change over this period in an ecologically fragile environment is a challenging task, thus two methods that have been widely employed in studying urban environments were compared in this study: sub-pixel using spectral mixture analyses (SMA) and object-based classification. The SMA linear model, applied over moderate spatial resolution imagery, does not produce accurate results for urban composition mapping showing significant spectral confusion between classes. Instead, the object-based classification using spectral indices proved to be more effective for detecting impervious surfaces over heterogeneous urban environments in inhabited islands. The accuracy assessment showed a correlation between estimated and true impervious surface abundance fraction higher than first expected (R 2 = 67.7%) for the object-based classification, considering the limitations of pixel size (Landsat imagery) in small heterogeneous urban landscapes. Hence, this methodology was applied to all three urban centers for further analysis. Through this assessment, the average annual growth rate in urban areas was calculated as 3.3% from 1992 to 2017. The foreseen applications and local implications for land planning and management are especially important for the Galapagos Islands. There is a need for planning systems and processes that involve all stakeholders, in order to support pre-existing conservation initiatives and sustainable development policies.

The aim of this paper is to analyse, using GIS and remote sensing techniques, the land use/cover change of the city of Dej, in order to explore the spatial and temporal characteristics and the consequences of urbanization trends of the past 250 years. We used a wide range of data, including historical maps and Landsat images from 1984 to 2017. In order to identify the land-use change, we used supervised classification and change detection methods. Analysing the obtained data, we could conclude the fact that, between 1763 and 1990, the area was characterized by a significant urban sprawl and land-use change, due to the economic development and political views (the urban border area increased from 1.2 km2 to 13.72 km2), but after 1990, the suburbanization process has begun, due to the economic failure, having a 13.85% built-up area increase towards S-SE and N direction, constrained by hydrological and geomorphological factors. DISCUSSIONS AND CONCLUSIONSBased on the results of this study, we can confirm that, the urbanization process has significantly modified the land-use between the 1763 and 2017 period. We successfully combined GIS and remote sensing techniques in order to calculate the rate and the tendency of land-use change, and the urban sprawl of the investigated area.With the help of the historical maps, supervised classification and change-detection techniques, we could identify the factors that changed the land-use of the study area: in the 18 th century, due to the city's particular setting, Dej became a market town, therefore, the urban border area had grown by 116.66% and the forest lands decreased by 47.29%; in 1881, the railway infrastructure had developed, leading to the development of the city's economy, having, as consequence an increase of 20.76% urban area; after the Second World War, new industries appeared, therefore. population migration had begun and the urban border area has increased significantly by 281.11% and the forest lands had decreased dramatically by 82.05%; after 1990, the suburbanization process of the city has begun, caused by new political, social and economic contexts introduced in Romania; due to the economic loss and the attraction of the rural sites, the built-up area has increased by 13.85% in the S-SE and N direction, near the northern communication roads; the forest lands were characterized by stagnation. Using Lakshmana's formula, we could predict the fact that, in the future, the city of Dej will unite with the neighbouring villages, having a 47% built-up area increase.The Someș River bed, due to several floods, changed drastically, therefore, it was necessary to deviate and drain some of the river's arms.
