Analysis of Two Phase Flows on Stepped Spillways

Abstract: cavitation damages (Gomes, 2006;Olinger, 2001). The obtained results presented in this chapter are still approximate, but already show that the problem is treatable using numerical tools. The main problems, as shown in this chapter, are related to the behavior of the free surface. This study considers the skimmimg flow regime, which generally occurs for large specific water discharges (Chanson, 2000). It is expected that the bed profile of the inlet structure affects the position of the inception point of the … Show more

“…Another issue to be considered is the entrapment and the accumulation of small gas bubbles in the liquid phase. The VOF model presented in the following section is not able to simulate small droplets and bubbles lower than the scale of the mesh elements, Valero and Bung, 51 Lobosco et al, 52 Tøge. 53 The maximum volume of the cells in our mesh is of the order of 10 À7 m 3 and gets to the order of 10 À11 m 3 around the pipe and where air is flowing.…”

“…Numerical simulations were performed using the open-source toolbox OpenFOAM (5.0). Its two-phase solver, InterFoam, which is based on the volume of fluid (VOF) method, has been proven to successfully model complex flows [16][17][18][19][20][21]. The main goals of the present study were as follows: (1) to validate the InterFoam solver with a free-surface profile, (2) to discuss the effects of the upstream face angle on discharge coefficient, and (3) to discuss the effects of the upstream face angle on the behavior of a broad-crested weir.…”
