Analysis of the Usefulness Range of the Averaged Electrothermal Model of a Diode–Transistor Switch to Compute the Characteristics of the Boost Converter

Abstract: In the design of modern power electronics converters, especially DC-DC converters, circuit-level computer simulations play an important role. This article analyses the accuracy of computations of the boost converter characteristics in the steady state using an electrothermal averaged model of a diode–transistor switch containing an Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) and a rapid switching diode. This model has a form of a subcircuit for SPICE (Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis). The infl… Show more

“…This approach is justified only when the switching time of these devices is much shorter than the period of the control signal [96]. In the paper [97], the limitations of the averaged model of the PWM switch with the IGBT were analysed. The tests were carried out on the example of a boost converter operating at a wide range of frequencies, the duty cycle of the control signal, and load current.…”

“…Additionally, the parasitic inductance of the circuit components store energy by currents and discharges as voltage spikes during the transient inactivation [7]. The conduction loss of inductors, switches, and diodes, and the frequency loss of the switches, are expressed as (8), respectively:…”

“…The voltage gain of the Cuk converter, in a way, allows it to be used for three different types of operationstep-up, step-down, and pass-through. Additionally, the duty cycle determines which mode of operation is used [8,9]. Basically, a Cuk converter operates by storing the input source energy in inductors and then, releasing it to the output.…”

“…Taking into account the mentioned information, a compact model of the inverter was formulated. In formulating the presented model, the idea of compact average models of power converters described e.g., in [35,55,56] is used. According to this method, instead of waveforms of the actual values of voltages and currents in the considered converter, the averaged values of these currents and voltages are used.…”
