Analysis of the UCSF Symptom Management Theory: Implications for Pediatric Oncology Nursing

Abstract: Symptom management research is a priority for both children and adults with cancer. The UCSF Symptom Management Theory (SMT) is a middle range theory depicting symptom management as a multidimensional process. A theory analysis using the process described by Walker and Avant evaluated the SMT with attention to application in research involving children with cancer. Application of the SMT in studies involving children has been limited to descriptive studies testing only portions of the theory. Findings of these… Show more

“…The investigation showed the potential of the theory to influence guidance of nursing interventions and development of strategies directed to the management of symptoms in children with cancer, in addition to illustrating the applicability of the model in the research field. (29) On the basis of the findings of the present study, it is necessary to stress the importance of investing in the development of theoretical models that can guide clinical practice and nursing research to break the dissociation between teaching, research and care and enable continuous coordination and integration of these dimensions.…”

“…This was done through stating strategies to the group, listening to their experience of auditory hallucinations and recording it on the white board. The 10-session auditory hallucination management program was developed based on an extensive literature review of strategies to manage auditory hallucinations [15][16][17][18][19][20]. The sessions of the program are as follows: Using relaxation techniques such as breathing exercise to manage auditory hallucination.…”

“… The experimental group was divided into 8 groups; 6-7 patients per each group were attending the auditory hallucinations management program. [15][16][17][18][19][20]  Sessions of auditory hallucination management training programs were conducted for a period 60-90 minutes a session, every day for a period of 8 weeks. In some instances, sessions were carried out twice per week instead of 1 session per week, because of patients' shortened length of hospitalization and the very high patients turn over.…”
